Which Macs does ecommit Desktop support?

Both Apple Silicon (M-series) and Intel Macs. The download is a signed and notarized .dmg, so macOS opens it without any "unidentified developer" warnings.

Where does my API key live? Is it safe?

Your key is stored only on your Mac, in an owner-only file (~/.config/ecommit/config.json). It never reaches the interface layer of the app, is never logged, and is only ever sent to Anthropic to run your requests.

Does it change my code without asking?

Accepted Answer

No. Every run ends in a review screen: a per-file diff where you accept or reject each change before anything is committed. Rejected files are restored exactly as they were. An optional auto-commit mode exists if you prefer speed over review.

What happens if an edit breaks my build?

ecommit runs your build after every edit and automatically repairs failures (up to three attempts). If it still cannot produce a passing build, your repository is rolled back to its previous state — broken changes are never committed.

Which AI models can I use?

You choose per request in the Options menu: Claude Opus 4.8 (default), Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, or Sonnet 4.6 — the same lineup as the ecommit web editor.

How is the desktop app billed?

Accepted Answer

Today it is bring-your-own-key: usage is billed by Anthropic directly to your API account, and ecommit adds nothing on top. Team setups can route through a shared proxy instead, so members use tokens rather than raw API keys.

Does it work offline or with private repos?

Accepted Answer

Your code never leaves your machine except for the files relevant to a request, which are sent to the model to write the change. Everything else — file scanning, builds, git — runs locally, and private repositories need no special setup.

Is this the same as the ecommit web editor?

Accepted Answer

Same brand, different home: the web editor builds and deploys hosted projects, while the desktop app works directly on any local folder and your own git repository — closer to a terminal coding agent, with a visual review flow.
